Adventure

Ningxia offers an adventure for anyone willing to come explore.

Desert and Water

Northern Ningxia is almost surrounded by sand. The Tennger Desert touches Zhongwei to the north. It edges up to the Yellow River creating a beautiful scenic spot and fun place to play called Shapotou.

North of Yinchuan also has sand around Sand Lake (Shahu). There are 198 species of birds that can be viewed at Sand Lake as well as many fun activities in the sand.

Then to east of Yinchuan is HuangSha GuDu. It sits along the Yellow River and looks out towards Yinchuan. As with Shapotou and Sand Lake, you can ride camels, slide down the dunes and ride dune buggies.

Each of these key attractions has water activities like riding on sheepskin rafts or speeding down the river in a speed boat. Fun activities in the sand and on water.

Mountains

Mountains form the border for Ningxia on most sides. The Helan Mountains west of Yinchuan and the LiuPan Mountains along the southern border of Ningxia provide many opportunities for adventure.

The Helan Mountains are more rocky than green on the western side, but once you hike down into the valleys they are greener. The east side (Inner Mongolia side) are green and lush with vegetation.

The LiuPan Mountains are not in the desert climate of northern Ningxia. This mountain range is covered with trees, and it receives much more precipitation. Both mountain ranges provide multiple scenic spots and hiking trails.

History

Ningxia has numerous opportunities to study the histories of ancient civilizations that inhabited Ningxia.

There are several outdoor opportunities like visiting the XiXia Tombs east of the Helan Mountains or the Helan Mountain rock paintings. There is also the Ming Dynasty Great Wall along the southern end of the mountain range.

There are also several indoor opportunities as Yinchuan is home to the Ningxia Museum and the Ningxia Geological Museum. Wuzhong and Guyuan are also home to museums that detail the history of Ningxia.

Most of the museums have limited English descriptions. If you desire to understand much of what you are seeing, we recommended taking a translator with you.
